Annangspeaking

Annangspeaking refers to the use and transmission of the Annang language by the Annang people, primarily in Akwa Ibom State in southern Nigeria, with communities in other parts of Nigeria and in diaspora communities abroad. Annang is a Niger-Congo language in the Benue-Congo branch, closely related to Efik and Ibibio. Most sources treat it as a distinct language rather than merely a dialect, though classifications vary on its exact position within the Ibibio–Efik cluster.

The language comprises several regional dialects that vary by locality. It is written with a Latin-based script, and a standard orthography has been developed by language communities and supported by educational and religious institutions. There are published texts, educational materials, and media programs in Annang, along with translations of religious and civic materials.

In sociolinguistic terms, Annang is used in homes, churches, markets, and cultural ceremonies, and it plays a role in traditional storytelling and music. English and Nigerian Pidgin are widely used in formal settings, and language shift toward English is common among younger generations in urban areas. Diaspora communities in Europe, North America, and other regions maintain use of Annang through churches, cultural associations, and community events.

Efforts to document, standardize, and promote Annang include language education initiatives and local media programming. These efforts aim to support intergenerational transmission and to preserve linguistic and cultural heritage for the Annang-speaking community.
