With the advent of digital technology, computer-generated imagery (CGI) has become dominant. This includes 2D digital animation, where drawings are created and manipulated on computers, often using software that mimics traditional techniques but with digital tools. 3D animation involves creating digital models in three-dimensional space, rigging them with virtual skeletons, and animating them by manipulating their joints and shapes. This is widely used in feature films, video games, and visual effects.

Other specialized techniques include pixilation, a form of stop-motion using real people as the moving objects, and experimental animation, which often pushes the boundaries of traditional methods or explores unique visual styles. The choice of animation technique depends on factors such as budget, desired aesthetic, and the specific needs of the project.
