Androgéneket, often referred to as androgens, are a group of steroid hormones that play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of male characteristics, although they are present in both males and females. In females, androgens are produced in smaller amounts and contribute to libido, bone health, and the development of pubic and underarm hair. They also play a role in ovulation and the menstrual cycle. The balance of androgens and estrogens is critical for overall reproductive health in both sexes.

Synthetic androgens are sometimes used medically to treat conditions like hypogonadism (low testosterone levels) or certain types of anemia. However, the misuse of androgens, particularly in the form of anabolic steroids, can lead to significant health risks including cardiovascular problems, liver damage, and psychological effects. The classification and regulation of androgens vary by country due to their potential for abuse.
