Andmebaasihaldussüsteem, often abbreviated as DBMS, is a software system designed for creating and managing databases. Its primary function is to provide a structured way to store, retrieve, and manipulate data efficiently and reliably. A DBMS acts as an intermediary between the user or application and the physical database, insulating them from the complexities of data storage and access.

Key features of a DBMS include data definition, which allows users to specify the structure and types of data to be stored. Data manipulation capabilities enable users to insert, update, delete, and query data. Transaction management ensures data integrity and consistency, even in the event of system failures or concurrent access. Security features control access to the data, preventing unauthorized modification or disclosure.

DBMS also provide mechanisms for data backup and recovery, safeguarding against data loss. They support concurrency control, allowing multiple users or applications to access and modify data simultaneously without conflicts. Different types of DBMS exist, such as relational, hierarchical, network, and object-oriented, each with its own way of organizing data.
