Anbauten

Anbauten, the plural form of Anbau, are architectural extensions built onto existing buildings to increase usable floor area without relocating. The term is commonly used in German-speaking regions and describes a connected addition that shares one or more walls with the original structure. Anbauten can be residential or commercial and vary in size from small pantry or utility rooms to full rear living spaces or conservatories.

Typical configurations include rear extensions, side extensions along the façade, and single- or two-storey additions. Conservatories or glass rooms are also common forms of an Anbau. They can be constructed in traditional masonry, timber frame, or lightweight systems. Materials and finishes are often chosen to harmonize with the original building or to create a deliberate contrast.

Common purposes include kitchens, living rooms, sunrooms (Wintergärten), verandas, and garages. Design considerations focus on alignment with the existing building, matching scale and rooflines, and ensuring proper structural integration with foundations, insulation, ventilation, and drainage. Compliance with local planning rules and energy codes is also a key factor in planning and execution.

Historically, Anbauten have allowed houses to adapt to changing needs and growing families without new construction at the street line. In modern practice, prefabricated or modular Anbauten offer faster installation and improved thermal performance. In addition to housing, commercial buildings may use Anbauten to expand offices, storage, or showroom space.
