Anakata

Anakata is a census town located in the Kandi subdivision of the Murshidabad district in the Indian state of West Bengal. The town lies on the southeastern bank of the Bhagirathi River, a distributary of the Ganges, and is bounded to the north by the town of Amdanga and to the west by the Bhagirathi. The area covers approximately 5.72 square kilometres and is part of the larger contiguous urban agglomeration of Murshidabad.

According to the 2011 Census of India, Anakata has a population of 8,932, of which 53% are male and 47% female. The literacy rate stands at 70.1% for the population over six years of age, with a noticeable gap between male and female literacy. The town features a mix of residential and commercial areas, with small-scale trade, handloom weaving, and agricultural produce markets forming the backbone of the local economy. Rice, paddy, and various vegetables are the principal products of the surrounding agricultural lands.

Anakata is served by a number of state highways which link it to the district headquarters, Murshidabad, as well as to the regional capital of Kolkata via a network of regional roads. Public transport includes bus services operated by the West Bengal Transport Corporation. The nearest railway station is Kandi Junction, situated about 10 kilometres to the south, providing rail connectivity to major cities such as Sealdah, Howrah, and Malda.

The town falls under the jurisdiction of the Anakata gram panchayat for local governance. The CPD and district police stations in Murshidabad district provide law enforcement. Educational facilities comprise primary and secondary schools operated by the West Bengal State Education Department, while higher education is pursued in nearby educational institutions in Kandi and Murshidabad.
