Amyrlin

An Amyrlin Seat is the title given to the head of the Aes Sedai, the all-female order of channelers in the Wheel of Time fantasy series. The office is based in the White Tower in Tar Valon, and the Amyrlin is the political and spiritual leader of the Aes Sedai. The holder's authority extends over all Ajahs, though actual power depends on relationships with the Keeper and the Sitters who advise, supervise, and sometimes contest the seat.

Selection is by consensus of the Sitters of the White Tower; once chosen, the Amyrlin typically appoints a Keeper to act as chief administrator and to manage Tower affairs when the Amyrlin travels or is otherwise occupied. The appointment is temporary in the sense that the seat passes to a successor upon death or deposition. The Amyrlin may command the Tower's resources, preside over major council meetings, and discipline or exile Aes Sedai who violate Tower law.

Symbolically, the Amyrlin's authority is associated with ceremonial rings and staffs, and with the loyalties of the Ajahs. In the narrative, the office is central to Tower politics and often a focal point for factional strife, including conflicts with the Black Ajah and rival claimants to the seat.
