Members are primarily characterized by their ability to extend flexible lobose pseudopods and by a lack of rigid protective tests. The group is mostly identified through molecular phylogenetic analyses and includes several morphologically diverse genera that share common genetic markers. The recognition of Ameeboita as a natural, monophyletic group remains a matter of debate among protistologists.
