Aluminiumgarvning is a term used in metalworking and design to describe a range of surface-finishing techniques that produce leather-like textures or aged patinas on aluminium substrates. While not a single standardized process, aluminiumgarvning generally combines chemical patination with mechanical texturing to achieve a tactile, decorative finish.

Typical preparation includes degreasing and lightly etching to remove surface oxides and improve adhesion. Chemical patination may employ tannin-rich solutions, such as plant-derived extracts, or acid-based patinas to create varied tones and grain-like patterns. Mechanical methods—embossing, engraving, brushing, or sanding—are used to simulate leather grain and introduce contrast. A top coat or sealant, usually a clear lacquer or polyurethane, protects the finish. Some practitioners integrate anodizing with selective dyeing or laser-etching to enhance color depth and texture.

Substrates include anodized aluminium and uncoated aluminium alloys; alloy composition and thickness influence patina uptake, durability, and wear resistance. Variants range from subtle aged looks to pronounced grain textures, with color introduced through dyes, stains, or translucent finishes.

Applications span decorative panels, furniture accents, lighting, signage, and bespoke jewelry. The technique is valued for combining the durability of metal with a tactile, organic appearance.
