The term combines a Latin-inspired root suggesting height or elevation ("altus") with a medical suffix ("-itus") to evoke a sense of episodic disturbance.

In the canonical fictional usage, altitus refers to an episodic syndrome characterized by sudden, brief periods of heightened sensory perception and altered cognition, followed by full recovery. Attacks resemble migraine aura or temporal lobe phenomena but are distinguished by more diffuse sensory amplification and variable motor symptoms.
