Altitudedepth

Altitudedepth is a conceptual term used to describe a unified vertical position metric that spans from high altitude in the atmosphere to depth in the ocean or subsurface. In practice, altitude refers to height above a reference surface, typically mean sea level or a geoid, while depth refers to distance below a reference surface, usually the sea surface or ground surface. Altitudedepth combines these into a single framework to describe a location’s vertical position relative to a chosen datum.

Because altitude and depth rely on different reference surfaces, altitudedepth requires careful datum handling. Converting between vertical datums (for example, geoid-based height vs. ellipsoidal height, or water-surface depth vs. land elevation) is essential. In some analyses, positive values denote above-sea-level positions and negative values denote below-sea-level or below-ground positions, while in others a continuous scale is used across the air–water interface.

Measurement and data sources for altitudedepth draw on a mix of technologies. Barometric and GNSS-based methods provide atmospheric altitude, while radar and LiDAR map terrain elevations. Bathymetric surveys, including multibeam sonar and satellite-altimetry, measure depths beneath the sea surface. Digital elevation models, bathymetric charts, and tide or geoid models are used to align data across domains and to apply appropriate corrections for tides and vertical datums.

Applications of a unified vertical framework include cross-domain planning for aviation and maritime operations, coastal and environmental risk assessment, and integrated geospatial analyses that cover air, land, and sea. Limitations arise from dynamic surfaces, tidal variations, and the need for accurate datum transformations and uncertainty accounting.
