The Altis functioned as the religious and ceremonial heart of Olympia and contained its principal sanctuaries, temples, treasuries, altars, and monuments devoted to Zeus and other gods. The sanctuary complex included notable structures such as the Philippeion, a circular temple built by Philip II of Macedon within the Altis. Olympia’s Altis was the center of panhellenic worship and athletic activity; it remained a major pilgrimage site throughout antiquity. Today, the site is an archaeological area and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site listed as the Archaeological Site of Olympia since 1989.

In contemporary contexts, Altis is the name of a fictional Mediterranean island featured in the military simulation game Arma 3 by Bohemia Interactive, released in 2013. The Altis map is a large-scale map in the game, designed to resemble a Greek-influenced landscape, featuring mountains, forests, coastlines, several towns, airfields, and a central urban area. It serves as the setting for both single-player scenarios and multiplayer missions, and is used as a platform for tactical gameplay and realism-driven combat simulation.
