Alshayatin

Alshayatin (Arabic: الشياطين) is the plural form of shaytan and is used in Islamic theology to refer to malevolent beings that are part of the jinn creation. Jinn are a distinct creature class from humans and angels, created by God from smokeless fire. Among the jinn are the alshayatin, a subset characterized by rebellion and deceit, with Iblis (Satan) often regarded as their leader.

Islamic sources describe alshayatin as agents of misguidance who tempt humans toward sin. They are commonly said to whisper or insinuate evil thoughts into people’s minds and hearts, a process sometimes described with the term waswas. They are generally considered invisible to most people, capable of adopting disguises or forms, but they do not possess coercive power over human beings; free will and divine guidance remain central to human decision making and moral responsibility.

In the Qur’an and related traditions, believers are urged to seek protection from the alshayatin and their schemes. Practices such as recitation of the Qur’an, remembrance of God, and certain supplications are described as means to resist their influence. The concept encompasses both the broad category of malevolent beings who serve as adversaries in spiritual struggle and the more specific figure of Satan within that broader group.

Scholars distinguish between the broader jinn category and the subset identified as alshayatin, emphasizing that not all jinn are evil and that alshayatin represent those among them who actively oppose God’s guidance. The term remains a common element in Islamic cosmology and moral discourse.
