Alppivyöhykkeet

Alppivyöhykkeet, also known as Alpine zones, refer to the distinct ecological regions found at high altitudes in mountainous areas, particularly in the Alps. These zones are characterized by harsh environmental conditions, including low temperatures, high winds, intense solar radiation, and a short growing season. Vegetation in these areas is adapted to survive these challenges, typically consisting of low-growing plants such as mosses, lichens, grasses, and small, hardy shrubs.

The altitudinal zonation of these zones is a key feature. As elevation increases, the type of vegetation changes, forming distinct belts. Below the alppivyöhykkeet, one finds forests (montane zones), followed by subalpine zones with dwarf shrubs and scattered trees. Above the alpine zones, the vegetation becomes sparser, eventually giving way to bare rock and permanent snowfields or glaciers, known as the nival zone.

The specific composition of flora and fauna in alppivyöhykkeet varies depending on the geographic location and local climate. However, common adaptations include small size, dense foliage, and mechanisms for storing water and nutrients. Animals found in these zones are also specialized, often possessing thick fur or feathers for insulation and efficient methods for finding food and shelter. These delicate ecosystems are sensitive to climate change, making them important indicators of environmental shifts.
