Alloy-sensitive is a condition that affects some metal alloys, particularly those containing nickel. The term refers to the tendency of these alloys to react with human skin, causing allergic contact dermatitis. This reaction is a form of occupational skin disease, often affecting those who work with these alloys, such as metal workers, jewelry makers, and medical equipment manufacturers.

The reaction typically occurs when nickel from the alloy comes into contact with the skin, often through abrasion or cuts in the skin. In people with an allergy, the immune system reacts to the presence of nickel by producing an inflammatory response, resulting in a range of symptoms, including redness, itching, and blistering.

All metal alloys containing nickel are considered to be potentially allergic, but some are more likely to cause a reaction than others. For example, stainless steel alloys containing more than 60% nickel are more likely to cause an allergic reaction than those containing lower concentrations. Likewise, 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel alloys, which contain high concentrations of nickel, are more likely to be allergenic than other types of stainless steel.

Individuals who work with metal alloys and experience symptoms such as redness, itching, or blistering after handling alloys should consult a healthcare professional for diagnosis and treatment. Avoiding contact with the allergenic alloy and using protective measures, such as gloves and protective sleeves, can help prevent reactions. In some cases, treatment may involve topical corticosteroids or immunotherapy.
