Allinorganic

Allinorganic refers to substances or materials that are composed exclusively of inorganic elements and bonds, with no carbon-containing ligands or organic moieties. In practice, the precise meaning depends on context; many fields reserve the term for materials that lack organic cations or hydrocarbons, while others treat certain carbon-containing species (such as carbonates) as inorganic. The label highlights a contrast with organic chemistry, organometallics, and hybrid organic–inorganic systems.

Typical all-inorganic materials include metal oxides, sulfides, phosphates, nitrides, and related ceramics. A notable subset is all-inorganic perovskites, such as CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I), which replace organic cations with inorganic ones in the ABX3 framework. These materials are studied for optics, electronics, and catalysis, alongside inorganic polymers, zeolites, and spinels.

Properties of all-inorganic compounds often include high thermal stability, resistance to moisture, and robust chemical durability. They can offer favorable electronic or optical features but may present synthesis and processing challenges, such as high-temperature requirements or limited solution-processability. Toxicity and resource concerns (for example, lead in some perovskites) are part of ongoing evaluation.

Synthesis and characterization rely on solid-state synthesis, hydrothermal methods, or inorganic solution chemistry, followed by analysis with X-ray diffraction, spectroscopy, and electron microscopy. The term 'all-inorganic' is largely descriptive and context-dependent, used to distinguish materials from organic- or hybrid systems in research and industry.
