Allergeninduced

Allergeninduced describes reactions triggered by exposure to allergens in individuals who are sensitized to those substances. It covers a range of conditions in which the immune system responds inappropriately to ordinarily harmless substances, such as pollen, foods, dust mites, mold, animal dander, or insect venom. Reactions can affect the skin, airways, gastrointestinal tract, and cardiovascular system, and may be mild or life-threatening.

Mechanisms typically involve sensitization, where exposure to an allergen leads to production of allergen-specific IgE antibodies that bind to mast cells and basophils. Upon subsequent exposures, crosslinking of IgE triggers release of mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes, causing immediate symptoms (the early phase). A later phase may involve eosinophils and other inflammatory cells, sustaining or amplifying symptoms over hours to days. Non-IgE-mediated pathways and mixed mechanisms can also contribute, particularly in certain forms of dermatitis and gastrointestinal reactions.

Common presentations include allergic rhinitis and conjunctivitis, asthma triggered by allergens, atopic dermatitis, and food allergies. Severe reactions can progress to anaphylaxis, requiring urgent medical treatment. Diagnosis relies on clinical history and may include skin prick testing, serum-specific IgE tests, oral food challenges, or other functional assays, interpreted in the context of regional allergen exposure and symptom timing.

Management focuses on avoidance of known triggers where feasible, pharmacotherapy to control symptoms (such as antihistamines, intranasal corticosteroids, leukotriene receptor antagonists, or inhaled therapies for asthma), and, in selected cases, allergen immunotherapy (subcutaneous or sublingual). Emergency plans and access to epinephrine are essential for individuals at risk of anaphylaxis. Education and monitoring are important components of care.
