Alkoholiryhmiin refers to chemical compounds that contain one or more hydroxyl functional groups, represented as -OH, attached to a saturated carbon atom. These hydroxyl groups are polar, making alcohols capable of forming hydrogen bonds, which influences their physical properties such as solubility and boiling point. The simplest alcohol is methanol (CH3OH), followed by ethanol (C2H5OH), which is commonly found in alcoholic beverages.

Alcohols are classified based on the number of hydroxyl groups they possess. Monohydric alcohols have one hydroxyl group, dihydric alcohols have two (like ethylene glycol), and polyhydric alcohols have more than two (like glycerol). Further classification is based on the carbon atom to which the hydroxyl group is attached. Primary alcohols have the hydroxyl group bonded to a carbon atom that is attached to one other carbon atom. Secondary alcohols have the hydroxyl group bonded to a carbon atom attached to two other carbon atoms. Tertiary alcohols have the hydroxyl group bonded to a carbon atom attached to three other carbon atoms.

The properties of alcohols vary significantly with their chain length and structure. Shorter chain alcohols are generally soluble in water due to the polarity of the hydroxyl group, while longer chain alcohols become less soluble as the hydrophobic hydrocarbon chain increases. Alcohols undergo various chemical reactions, including oxidation, esterification, and dehydration, making them important intermediates in organic synthesis and serving various industrial applications as solvents, fuels, and disinfectants.
