Alkaliniteetit, commonly translated as alkalinity, refers to the capacity of water to neutralize acids. It is a measure of the ability of water to act as a buffer against pH changes. This buffering capacity is primarily due to the presence of dissolved bases, most notably bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide ions. Other weaker bases like borates, silicates, and phosphates can also contribute to alkalinity.

The concentration of these ions is influenced by geological conditions and anthropogenic inputs. For example, areas with limestone bedrock tend to have higher alkalinity due to the dissolution of calcium carbonate. Agricultural runoff, particularly from fertilizers containing phosphates, can also increase alkalinity.

Alkalinity is an important parameter in various environmental and industrial contexts. In aquatic ecosystems, it plays a crucial role in maintaining stable pH levels, which is essential for the survival of aquatic life. Low alkalinity can make water bodies susceptible to rapid and drastic pH drops, especially during acid rain events or industrial discharges. In drinking water treatment, alkalinity influences the effectiveness of coagulation and disinfection processes. Industrially, it is monitored in boiler water to prevent corrosion and scaling.

While often used interchangeably with pH, alkalinity and pH are distinct concepts. pH measures the current acidity or basicity of water, whereas alkalinity measures its capacity to resist changes in pH. A water sample can have a neutral pH but still possess significant alkalinity. Understanding alkalinity is therefore vital for managing water quality and ensuring its suitability for various uses.
