This is crucial before laying final floor coverings such as tiles, laminate, hardwood, or carpet. Uneven subfloors can lead to problems like cracked tiles, gaps in flooring, or a generally poor aesthetic finish.

The process typically involves applying a self-leveling compound or a cementitious screed mixture to the existing subfloor. The compound is usually made of cement, gypsum, sand, and various polymers or additives that enhance flow and strength. It is mixed with water to achieve a workable consistency and then poured or spread onto the prepared area. The material naturally flows and spreads to fill low spots, creating a smooth, level surface as it dries.

Preparation of the subfloor is a critical step. This involves cleaning the area thoroughly to remove dust, debris, grease, and any loose materials. Priming the subfloor with a suitable primer is often necessary to ensure good adhesion of the leveling compound and to prevent the subfloor from absorbing too much water from the mixture, which could weaken it.
