Alioikeus

Alioikeus is a Finnish term that translates to "lower court" or "inferior court." It refers to the courts of first instance in the Finnish judicial system. These courts handle the initial stages of most legal proceedings, both civil and criminal. The primary alioikeudet are the district courts (käräjäoikeudet).

District courts are responsible for a wide range of cases, including minor criminal offenses, debt recovery, family law matters like divorce and child custody, and civil disputes involving smaller sums of money. They are the primary venue where evidence is presented and witness testimonies are heard. Decisions made by a district court can be appealed to higher courts.

The role of alioikeudet is crucial for the accessibility of justice. They are located throughout Finland, ensuring that most citizens have a local court to address their legal needs.
