Alinenaiset

Alinenaiset is a Finnish neologism that appears in some discussions to refer to women occupying lower social strata, particularly where gender intersects with economic marginalization. The term combines ali- meaning under or sub and naiset meaning women. It is not a standard dictionary entry and has no single, universally accepted definition. In academic discourse, more established terms such as working-class women, marginalized women, or subaltern women are often used, with alinenaiset appearing mainly in media articles, opinion pieces, and online debates.

The concept focuses on how structural factors such as poverty, unemployment, education, housing, and migration status shape women’s experiences and access to resources. Proponents argue that the label helps highlight gendered dimensions of social inequality and can call for policy attention. Critics warn that the term can oversimplify identities, risk essentializing women by class, or imply that all women in a given social layer share the same experiences.

In usage, alinenaiset may appear in discussions about pay gaps, social welfare, childcare, or migrant women, but there is no fixed set of definitions or criteria. It is sometimes employed rhetorically to contrast with terms like ylänaiset (upper-class women) or keskiluokan naiset (middle-class women), though these oppositions are not standard.
