Algoritmivalintaa

Algoritmivalintaa, or algorithm selection, refers to the process of choosing the most suitable algorithm from a set of alternatives to solve a given problem instance. The aim is to maximize performance, typically measured by runtime, solution quality, or reliability, across diverse instances.

The core concept is the Algorithm Selection Problem (ASP). Formalized by Rice in 1976, ASP asks for a model that maps features of problem instances to the algorithm that will perform best on those instances. ASP can be pursued in static form (a fixed choice for each problem class) or dynamic form (per-instance decision using observed features).

Common approaches include portfolio methods, which maintain a diverse collection of algorithms and decide how to allocate resources among them; and per-instance or dynamic selection, which uses instance features to predict the best algorithm for each new case. Meta-learning and machine learning models are often trained on historical performance data to guide these decisions. Automated algorithm configuration and hyper-heuristics are related techniques that tune solver behavior or search across algorithm families to improve results.

Key components are informative instance features, performance models that estimate expected outcomes, and robust evaluation protocols. Applications span SAT solving, constraint programming, scheduling, optimization, and AutoML, where combining multiple solvers or tunable algorithms can yield superior overall performance.

Challenges include the cost of feature extraction, transferability of models across domains, overfitting to historical data, and balancing multiple objectives such as speed versus solution quality.
