Alderun

Alderun is a coastal city and regional capital of Graymere Province in the kingdom of Valoria. Located on the eastern shore of the Lythian Sea at the mouth of the Alder River, the city commands a natural harbor that has supported trade for centuries. The name derives from alder trees lining the riverbanks.

Alderun began as a trading post in the early medieval period and grew into a fortified town by the 14th century. It became an administrative center in the late 17th century under the Valorian crown. The city underwent modernization in the 19th and 20th centuries, including rail connections and industrial facilities, while preserving historical districts.

The city lies in a temperate maritime climate, with mild winters and cool summers. The harbor area is flat and urban, with hills to the west. The Alder River runs through the older quarters before emptying into the sea.

As of 2023, Alderun has roughly 75,000 residents. The population is ethnically diverse, reflecting its status as a port town. The official language is Alderic, with minority communities speaking Estari and Turan dialects.

The economy centers on the port, fishing fleets, timber processing, and ship repair. Light manufacturing, logistics, and tourism contribute to growth, supported by regional rail and highway networks.

Alderun hosts an annual Maritime Festival and a street market along the Old Wharf. Notable landmarks include the Stone Market, Alder Gate, and the Cathedral of the North Gate. The city is administered by a democratically elected council and a ceremonial mayor.
