The term refers to a form of self-organized, grassroots activism that emphasizes direct action, community involvement, and creative expression rather than traditional political structures or institutionalized protest.

Originating in the late 1970s and early 1980s during the German punk movement, aktivpunkts emerged as a response to the perceived ineffectiveness of mainstream political parties and bureaucratic systems.
