Based on these measurements, the BMS can perform several critical tasks. It also manages the charging and discharging rates to optimize battery health.

Furthermore, a BMS often includes features for cell balancing, which ensures that all cells within a battery pack have a similar state of charge. This is crucial for maximizing the usable capacity of the pack and preventing premature failure of individual cells. Temperature monitoring is another vital function, as extreme temperatures can negatively impact battery performance and safety. The BMS can initiate protective measures, such as reducing power output or shutting down the battery, if temperatures exceed safe limits.

Modern BMS also provide diagnostic information and communicate with other systems, such as vehicle control units or power management software. This allows for real-time monitoring of battery status, estimation of remaining capacity, and fault detection.
