Ainevesi

Ainevesi is a lake situated in the Pirkanmaa region of southern Finland. It is one of the larger lakes in the country and has a surface area of approximately 136 square kilometers.

The lake is a type of limnic body of water, known as a lake-stratified body, as it holds a distinct layer of cold water below the surface. This cold layer remains in place year-round, maintaining a stable temperature of around 4°C, and is often referred to as a chemical meromictic lake. As a result, only certain aquatic organisms can exist in the deeper layers of the water, while other species dominate the shallower areas.

The shoreline of Ainevesi is characterized by a soft sedimenterdin rim, which is in part due to the deposition of fine sediment carried by the westward-flowing River Kokemäenjoki watershed. This has allowed for the development of unique habitats and assisted in the protection of the area from erosion.

Ainevesi supports a diverse range of aquatic plant and animal species and is also a recharge zone for local groundwater sources. Efforts to preserve and maintain the balance of the lake's ecosystem meet ongoing local community challenges, particularly with regards to the sanitation and runoff from a variety of related wildlife and human activities.

Historically, Ainevesi naturally froze over or was so shallow that water stood, offering numerous natural environments for native animals and plant to establish themselves over many thousands of years.
