Aikatauluttajat (Finnish for schedulers or timetable planners) refers to individuals or software systems responsible for creating and maintaining timetables and work rosters. They examine demand patterns, resource availability, and regulatory constraints to produce schedules that meet operational goals while balancing efficiency, reliability, and fairness.

In public transport and services, aikatauluttajat design service timetables that coordinate routes, vehicles, and crews, incorporating maintenance needs and peak demand. They use optimization techniques such as constraint programming and integer programming, along with heuristics and simulation. Outputs include service timetables, vehicle schedules, and crew rosters.

In workforce planning, aikatauluttajat create shift plans to cover tasks while complying with labor agreements, health and safety rules, and employee preferences. Computerized scheduling systems are commonly used to automate entry, conflict checking, and scenario analysis.

In computing, the term resembles process scheduling, where a scheduler selects tasks for execution. While distinct, the concept shares goals of efficiency and fairness.

Key challenges include data quality, demand variability, disruptions, and balancing competing constraints; benefits include improved reliability, cost control, and better utilization of resources.
