Agalychnis

Agalychnis is a genus of tree frogs in the family Phyllomedusidae. These frogs are commonly known as leaf frogs or gliding tree frogs. They are found in the Neotropics, ranging from southern Mexico to northern Argentina. The genus was first described in 1875.

Species within Agalychnis are characterized by their bright green coloration, large, forward-facing eyes with vertical pupils, and elongated toes with adhesive discs. Many species exhibit a distinctive, slow, deliberate movement. A notable characteristic of some Agalychnis species is their ability to glide. They achieve this by spreading out their limbs and using webbing between their toes and fingers, which acts like a parachute, allowing them to control their descent when jumping from trees.

The reproductive behavior of Agalychnis frogs is also noteworthy. Most species lay their eggs on leaves overhanging bodies of water. When the tadpoles hatch, they drop into the water below to continue their development. This strategy helps protect the eggs from aquatic predators. Their diet typically consists of insects and other small invertebrates.

The genus Agalychnis includes several well-known species such as Agalychnis callidryas, the red-eyed tree frog, and Agalychnis spurrelli, the sticky-toed tree frog. The conservation status of Agalychnis species varies, with some facing threats from habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as climate change.
