Afrits

Afrits, also spelled ifrits, are a class of jinn in Islamic and Arab folklore. They are typically described as powerful fire-spirits, often fierce or rebellious, though some tales portray them as capable of loyalty or wisdom. In many traditions, afrits rank among the stronger and more dangerous beings within the jinn realm.

Origin and classification: The name derives from the Arabic عفريت (afarit), with plural عفاريت. Jinn are said to be beings of smokeless fire created by God; within that category, afrits are distinguished by their association with fire, strength, and magical abilities. They are frequently contrasted with other jinn types such as marids, which are linked to water.

Folklore and notable appearances: Afrits appear in various tales, often as formidable adversaries or powerful servants. In Arabian Nights, they may be sealed or bound by a master, and clever protagonists prevail through wit or magical aid. Some legends attribute to Solomon or other figures the power to imprison or control afrits with rings, talismans, or seals.

Modern depiction: In contemporary fantasy, 'ifrit' or 'afrit' is a common term for a fire-using jinn or demon. They appear in novels, role-playing games, and video games as potent adversaries, allies, or generally magical beings, with depictions ranging from malevolent to benevolent.
