Aestheticrot is a neologism and internet subculture that emerged around the late 2010s and early 2020s. It combines the word "aesthetic," referring to a set of principles concerned with the nature and appreciation of beauty, with "rot," often used metaphorically to describe decay, corruption, or a decline. The term describes a fascination with the beauty found in decay, decay as a process, or the aestheticization of things that are typically considered unpleasant, morbid, or decaying.

The aesthetic often overlaps with other internet aesthetics such as dark academia, cottagegore, and surrealism. Content associated with aestheticrot can include imagery of decaying natural elements like fallen leaves, rotting wood, or wilting flowers, as well as abandoned spaces, vintage items in disrepair, or even abstract representations of entropy. It can also extend to themes of mortality, the passage of time, and the melancholy associated with loss or the ephemeral nature of existence. The appreciation is not necessarily for the decay itself in a literal sense, but for the visual and emotional qualities it evokes. This can include textures, color palettes, and the narrative or philosophical implications of decay.

Aestheticrot is primarily expressed through visual media on platforms like Tumblr, Pinterest, and Instagram, where users share curated collections of images and art. It represents a way of finding beauty and meaning in overlooked or unconventional sources, often challenging traditional notions of what is considered aesthetically pleasing.
