Aerococcaceae
Aerococcaceae is a family of bacteria that falls within the class Bacilli of the phylum Firmicutes. Members of this family are placed in the order Bacillales. The type genus Aerococcus was first described in the early 1970s and the family was formally established in the early 1990s after molecular phylogenetic analyses clarified its relationship to other bacilli. The family is monophyletic and is distinguished from related families by 16S rRNA gene sequences and conserved signature indels.
Bacteria in Aerococcaceae are Gram‑positive cocci, typically 0.5–1.0 μm in diameter, and are generally non‑spore forming.
Metabolically, Aerococcaceae species are generally microaerophilic to facultatively anaerobic and grow best under low oxygen concentrations.
Environmental isolates of Aerococcaceae have been recovered from animal and human urinary tracts, food products, and
Research on Aerococcaceae focuses mainly on their pathogenic potential and on refining diagnostic methods, since traditional
