Adelsätt is a Swedish term referring to a noble lineage or a noble house. It denotes a family that has, or historically has had, noble status and is passed down through generations. An adelsätt is typically associated with a hereditary surname, a coat of arms, and membership in the Swedish nobility as an estate. The word combines adel (nobility) with ätt (lineage or clan).

Origins and formation

Adelsätts can originate in two main ways: through ancient noble origin (äldre adelsätt) or by ennoblement (adelskap) granted by the crown, often through an adelsbrev. When a family is ennobled, its descendants inherit the noble status and the lineage is recorded as a specific ätt in genealogical and heraldic registers. The name of the ätt often serves as the family name for its members and appears in heraldic seals and documents.

Historical role and privileges

Historically, adelsätts enjoyed certain privileges and social prominence within the estate system.
