Actaeon

Actaeon is a figure from Greek mythology, described as a hunter from the region of Arcadia. In most traditions he is said to be the son of Autolycus, though genealogies vary. The core of the myth concerns Actaeon’s encounter with Artemis, the goddess of the hunt.

According to the story, Actaeon accidentally comes upon Artemis while she is bathing with her nymphs. The sight offends the goddess, who punishment-transforms him into a stag. He is then pursued and killed by his own hunting dogs. Versions of the tale emphasize different aspects of the transgression, including excessive curiosity or hubris in approaching a sacred boundary.

The myth of Actaeon has been transmitted through ancient Greek and Roman sources and has had a lasting influence on art and literature.
