Acanthusblad

Acanthusblad is a term used for the acanthus leaf motif in decorative arts and architecture. It refers to a stylized representation of the leaves of the acanthus plant and is widely associated with classical ornament. While inspired by real foliage, the motif is deliberately idealized to emphasize symmetry, rhythm, and ornamental flourish rather than botanical realism.

Botanically, acanthus denotes a genus in the plant family Acanthaceae. The ornamental form most often linked to architecture derives from the leaves of species such as Acanthus mollis, commonly called bear's breeches. In design, the leaves are rendered as curved, lobed shapes arranged around a vertical axis, sometimes with additional scrolls or rosettes.

Historically, the acanthus leaf is a hallmark of Classical architecture.
