Abstraktsioonikihi, often translated as “abstraction layer,” is a conceptual construct used in computer science and engineering to separate the interface of a system from its implementation details. The primary purpose of an abstraction layer is to reduce complexity by exposing only the necessary features to users or other system components, while hiding the underlying mechanisms. This separation facilitates modular design, enabling easier maintenance, reusability, and independent evolution of components.

In software, abstraction layers appear in many contexts. A common example is the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL), which provides a uniform API to interact with diverse hardware devices. Operating systems employ multiple layers, such as the kernel layer, device driver layer, and user‑space API layer. Likewise, application development frameworks frequently include service layers, data access layers, and presentation layers, each providing a distinct abstraction to simplify development and testing.

Abstraction layers are also integral to architectural styles such as Model‑View‑Controller (MVC) and layered architecture. Controllers abstract business logic from the user interface, while data access abstractions hide database technologies behind a consistent repository interface. These patterns promote loose coupling, allowing components to be swapped or upgraded with minimal impact on the rest of the system.

The concept extends beyond software to networking, where the OSI model’s seven layers provide successive abstraction levels, from physical transmission media up to application protocols. Additionally, the Model‑View‑ViewModel (MVVM) pattern in user‑interface design introduces abstraction between the underlying data models and the rendered view.
