Abisko

Abisko is a small locality in Kiruna Municipality, Norrbotten County, Sweden. It lies in Swedish Lapland on the northern shore of Lake Torneträsk, near the border with Norway, and at the foot of Mount Nuolja, serving as the gateway to Abisko National Park.

Abisko National Park, established in 1909, covers about 77 square kilometers and protects tundra, boreal forest, streams, and alpine habitats. The park is renowned for its accessibility for winter aurora viewing and summer hiking, particularly the Kungsleden trail.

The village functions as a base for tourism. The STF's Abisko Turiststation provides lodging and services; the Aurora Sky Station on Mount Nuolja offers views of the northern lights. The Kungsleden long-distance trail runs through Abisko, and visitors engage in winter sports such as cross-country skiing.

Climate wise, Abisko has a subarctic climate (Dfc) with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. The area experiences extended daylight in summer and polar night in winter. The clear, dry air around Abisko often makes for favorable aurora viewing.

History and people in the area include indigenous Sámi communities. The modern settlement developed with the construction of railways and growth of tourism in the early 20th century, and the national park’s establishment in 1909 marks Sweden’s early conservation efforts.
