Abhusten

Abhusten is a German word that translates to "to cough up" or "to cough out" in English. It refers to the act of expelling phlegm or other matter from the lungs and respiratory passages through a forceful cough. This is a common physiological reflex designed to clear the airways of irritants, mucus, or foreign substances.

The process of abhusten involves a deep inhalation followed by a sudden, forceful exhalation against a closed glottis. This builds up pressure in the chest, which is then rapidly released when the glottis opens, creating the characteristic sound of a cough. The expelled material, known as sputum, can vary in color and consistency depending on the underlying cause of the cough.

Abhusten is often associated with respiratory illnesses such as bronchitis, pneumonia, or the common cold. However, it can also be triggered by environmental factors like smoke or dust, or by chronic conditions like asthma or COPD. While a cough is a natural defense mechanism, persistent or severe abhusten, especially when accompanied by other symptoms like fever, shortness of breath, or chest pain, warrants medical attention. Medical professionals may use the term "productive cough" to describe a cough that brings up sputum, which is essentially the same action as abhusten.
