Aberdyfi

Aberdyfi is a small coastal village situated on the northern coast of the Llŷn Peninsula in Gwynedd, Wales. The settlement lies south of Pwllheli and is approximately eight miles from the market town of Caernarfon. Aberdyfi rests on the south bank of the River Dyfi where it empties into the Irish Sea, and the surrounding area is characterised by sandy beaches, dunes, and wetland habitats that support diverse wildlife.

The village’s history stretches back to the Bronze Age, with archaeological finds indicating early settlement along the river valley. The name Aberdyfi derives from the Welsh words for “mouth of the Dyfi.” During the medieval period Aberdyfi was a modest fishing community, and the arrival of the narrow-gauge Corris Railway in the late 19th century spurred modest growth. The railway’s closure in the 1960s marked the end of an era of commercial transportation, though the site now hosts heritage rail tours and museum displays that reflect its industrial past.

Tourism is the principal economic activity in Aberdyfi, attracting visitors to its scenic beach, where visitors can walk up the long stretch of dunes or explore the nearby Dyfi Cliff Nature Reserve. The village offers a selection of bed‑and‑breakfast accommodations, a small general store, and a caravan park. The local Aberdyfi Community Radio Station broadcasts information for residents and tourists alike.

Aberdyfi is accessible by bus services which link it with Pwllheli and Bangor, and the nearest railway station remains in Pwllheli. The village is also frequented by walkers and cyclists in the popular Llŷn Peninsula Coastal Path network, offering panoramic views of the Irish Sea and the surrounding Welsh countryside.
