Aavikkoympäristöt, or desert environments, are characterized by extremely low precipitation, typically less than 250 millimeters (10 inches) per year. These arid regions cover about one-fifth of the Earth's land surface and are found on every continent except Europe. Despite their dryness, deserts are not barren wastelands; they support a surprising diversity of life adapted to harsh conditions.

Deserts can be classified based on temperature and geographic location. Hot deserts, like the Sahara and the Mojave, experience scorching summer temperatures and cooler winters. Cold deserts, such as the Gobi and the Great Basin, have cold winters with snowfall and milder summers. Coastal deserts, like the Atacama, receive moisture from fog but very little rainfall. Polar deserts, found in the Arctic and Antarctic, are extremely cold and dry, with precipitation falling as snow.

Vegetation in desert environments is sparse and specialized. Plants have developed mechanisms to conserve water, such as deep root systems, small or waxy leaves, and the ability to store water in their tissues (succulents). Common desert plants include cacti, succulents, shrubs like creosote, and ephemeral wildflowers that bloom after rare rainfall.

Animal life is equally adapted to arid conditions. Many desert animals are nocturnal, avoiding the intense daytime heat. They often have physiological adaptations to minimize water loss, such as efficient kidneys and the ability to obtain water from their food. Common desert inhabitants include reptiles (snakes, lizards), insects, arachnids (scorpions, spiders), birds, and mammals like rodents, foxes, and camels.

Human habitation in deserts is challenging due to water scarcity and extreme temperatures, but some cultures have thrived in these regions for millennia, developing unique survival strategies and technologies.
