Aatomile

Aatomile is a herbaceous flowering plant in the family Asteraceae, cultivated for its aromatic flowers that are used to produce a herbal infusion and, to a lesser extent, essential oil. It is similar in appearance to common chamomile but is treated in horticulture as a distinct species or cultivar group, with several varieties selected for flavor and fragrance.

Aatomile grows as a short-lived perennial or annual, typically reaching 30 to 60 cm in height. It has slender green stems, finely divided leaves, and flower heads with white ray florets and a yellow central disk. The aroma is floral and citrusy, varying by cultivar and drying method. It prefers full sun and well-drained soil and tolerates moderate drought.

Cultivation and harvesting: It is commonly propagated from seed or division in spring. Seeds germinate in about 10–21 days at temperatures around 15–22 C. Plants are spaced about 20–30 cm apart. Flowers are harvested when fully open and dried for tea or processed for essential oil.

Uses and composition: Dried aatomile flowers are used to brew a tisane with a mild soothing effect and subtle digestive benefits. The essential oil is used in perfumery and aromatherapy. The chemical composition varies by variety but typically includes volatile terpenoids and flavonoids similar to related species.

Safety and regulation: Aatomile is generally considered safe for most people when used in moderation. Possible allergic reactions may occur in individuals sensitive to Asteraceae plants. The essential oil should be highly diluted before topical use, and ingestion or use during pregnancy should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
