Aashaadha

Aashaadha, also known as Ashadha or Aashadha, is the fifth month of the traditional Hindu lunar calendar, which follows the Vikram Samvat and Shaka calendars. It typically falls between late May and late June in the Gregorian calendar, marking the onset of the monsoon season in many parts of South Asia. The month is named after the star Ashadha, which is associated with the lunar mansion in Hindu astronomy.

Aashaadha holds cultural and religious significance in Hinduism. One of the most important festivals celebrated during this month is the Hindu festival of Aashadhi Bihu, primarily observed in the Indian state of Assam. This festival marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year and is celebrated with traditional dances, music, and rituals honoring the agricultural cycle. Another notable event is the observance of the Ashadha Purnima, which commemorates the birth anniversary of the Hindu saint and philosopher Adi Shankaracharya. This day is also associated with the worship of Lord Shiva and the offering of sacred threads (Janeu) to him.
