Aashadhi

Aashadhi is a significant cultural and religious observance primarily celebrated in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It falls during the Ashadha month of the Hindu calendar, which typically corresponds to June or July. The most prominent aspect of Aashadhi is the annual pilgrimage to Pandharpur, the abode of Lord Vitthal, an incarnation of Vishnu. Devotees, known as 'warkaris', undertake this journey on foot from various parts of Maharashtra, singing devotional songs and chanting the name of Vitthal.

The pilgrimage culminates on Ashadhi Ekadashi, the eleventh day of the bright half of Ashadha. This day is considered highly auspicious. The warkaris carry palanquins (palkhis) of revered saints like Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Tukaram, symbolizing their spiritual legacy and teachings. These palkhis travel for several days, attracting vast crowds and creating a vibrant spiritual atmosphere. The tradition of the wari, or pilgrimage, emphasizes devotion, equality, and community spirit. It is a testament to the enduring faith and cultural heritage of Maharashtra.
