ATNA

ATNA, short for Audit Trail and Node Authentication, is an Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) profile in the IT Infrastructure domain. It provides a framework for secure, authenticated communication between healthcare information systems and for the generation and management of security-relevant audit events. The goal is to improve accountability, traceability, and privacy in the exchange and use of patient information.

The Node Authentication component requires that participating systems authenticate one another, typically through the use of digital certificates and secure transport such as TLS with mutual authentication. This enables trusted, encrypted communication channels and helps verify the identity of sending and receiving nodes.

The Audit Trail component specifies the collection, transmission, and storage of security-relevant events. Systems are expected to generate auditable records for activities such as user access to patient data, actions performed on records, and system authentication events. These audit events are directed to an Audit Trail Repository or similar logging infrastructure, and the records are intended to be tamper-evident and time-stamped to support investigations, compliance, and forensics.

ATNA supports standardized audit message formats and event codes to facilitate interoperability across different vendors and systems. It is commonly implemented as part of broader IHE integration profiles, such as those used in enterprise document sharing, patient administration, and clinical information exchange, and it helps organizations meet regulatory and policy requirements for security and privacy, including HIPAA in the United States.
