ATEXkonforme is a term used to describe equipment and protective systems that comply with the ATEX directives. ATEX is a European Union directive that deals with potentially explosive atmospheres. The directives aim to ensure the safety of workers and the public in environments where explosive atmospheres may be present due to flammable gases, vapors, mists, or dusts. Equipment that is ATEXkonforme is designed and manufactured to minimize the risk of ignition within such hazardous areas.

Compliance with ATEX directives is mandatory for products placed on the EU market that are intended for use in explosive atmospheres. This involves a rigorous assessment process to verify that the equipment does not pose an ignition risk. Such risks can arise from electrical sparks, hot surfaces, mechanical friction, or electrostatic discharge. ATEXkonforme equipment is therefore designed with specific features to prevent these ignition sources.

The ATEX directives are divided into two main parts: Directive 2014/34/EU, which covers equipment and protective systems intended for use in potentially explosive atmospheres, and Directive 1999/92/EC, which concerns the minimum requirements for improving the safety and health protection of workers potentially at risk from explosive atmospheres. Equipment that is ATEXkonforme must meet the requirements of the former directive, while workplaces must adhere to the latter.

Certification for ATEXkonforme status is typically carried out by Notified Bodies, which are independent organizations authorized to assess and certify compliance. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their products meet the essential health and safety requirements of the ATEX directives. This often involves detailed testing and documentation to prove the equipment's suitability for use in specific explosive atmospheres, often categorized by gas groups and temperature classes.
