AMluokan

AMluokan, or category AM, is a driving license category used in many European Union member states that covers mopeds and light quad bikes. In Finnish contexts the term is AM-luokan kortti, referring to the same category within Finland’s licensing system. The category is designed as an entry point for riders who operate small, low-powered two- or four-wheeled vehicles.

Vehicles eligible for AM authorization are typically mopeds and light quad bikes. Standard specifications often include a maximum design speed around 45 km/h and an engine displacement up to 50cc for combustion engines, or an equivalent power limit for electric mopeds. Exact limits can vary by country, and some jurisdictions permit slightly different configurations under the AM umbrella.

Eligibility and training requirements vary by country but commonly include a minimum age, a theory examination, and a practical skills test. Many places require completion of a motorcycle safety or awareness course and proof of basic road competence. In some systems the AM license is issued separately from car licenses, while in others it can be added to an existing license once prerequisites are met. Safety gear such as helmets is typically required.

AMluokan serves as the entry-level motorcycle category and is seen as a stepping stone to higher categories (such as A1, A2, or A) in many national licensing frameworks. It is widely used by younger riders to gain practical experience in road traffic, while authorities regulate vehicle limits, training standards, and age requirements to ensure safety.
