AH1N1pdm09

AH1N1pdm09, also known as A(H1N1)pdm09, is a subtype of the influenza A virus. The "pdm" stands for "pandemic," indicating that this strain emerged during a global pandemic. The "09" refers to the year 2009, when the virus was first identified. AH1N1pdm09 is a reassortant virus, meaning it contains genetic material from multiple different influenza viruses. This reassortment can result in a virus that is more transmissible and virulent than its parent strains.

The virus was first detected in April 2009 in Mexico and quickly spread worldwide, leading to the 2009 influenza pandemic. It is characterized by symptoms similar to those of seasonal influenza, including fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. In some cases, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia, and has been associated with increased rates of hospitalization and death, particularly among young adults and the elderly.

AH1N1pdm09 is a trivalent virus, meaning it has three different types of surface proteins: hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) from the swine influenza virus, and a matrix protein (M) from the avian influenza virus. This unique combination of genetic material allows the virus to infect a wide range of hosts, including humans, pigs, and birds.

Vaccines were developed to protect against AH1N1pdm09, and widespread vaccination campaigns were implemented to control the spread of the virus. The pandemic lasted until June 2010, when the virus was declared to have subsided. However, the virus continues to circulate as a seasonal influenza strain, and periodic outbreaks occur.
