AEVO

AEVO, short for Ausbildereignungsprüfung (often called Ausbilderschein), is a German qualification that certifies a person to train apprentices under the Berufsbildungsgesetz (BBiG). The certificate is widely recognized as proof of the trainer's capability to plan, supervise, and assess vocational training within a company.

The examination is administered by the local Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) or Chamber of Crafts (HWK). It is typically required for individuals who want to act as instructors in most formal apprenticeship programs across sectors. In some cases, exemptions or alternative qualifications may apply, for example where a master craftsman title or other recognized credentials grant trainer rights under BBiG or sector-specific regulations.

Content and structure. The AEVO assessment covers core competencies needed for vocational training, including planning and organizing training, selecting and guiding trainees, applying appropriate instructional methods and didactic approaches, and understanding the legal and contractual aspects of training. The exam generally includes a theoretical component and a practical task, often evaluated in regional sessions, with candidates demonstrating their ability to design and conduct a training activity.

Outcome and usage. Successful candidates receive the Ausbilderschein, a certificate that enables them to train apprentices in most German firms. The credential is typically valid for life, and it is a common requirement for positions involving mentoring or supervising apprentices. While the AEVO is a standard route to trainer eligibility, certain professions or contexts may provide alternative paths or exemptions based on specific qualifications or professional status.
