It was originally created in 1981 by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products, who based it on an earlier operating system called QDOS. Microsoft licensed the operating system from Seattle Computer Products and released it as MS-DOS. IBM then licensed MS-DOS from Microsoft for its first personal computer, the IBM PC.
