4Nitroanisole

4-Nitroanisole, also known as p-nitroanisole or 1-methoxy-4-nitrobenzene, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C7H7NO3. It is a yellowish crystalline solid at room temperature. The compound is derived from anisole by the addition of a nitro group at the para position of the benzene ring.

The synthesis of 4-nitroanisole typically involves the nitration of anisole. This reaction is usually carried out using a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The methoxy group on anisole is an activating and ortho, para-directing group, leading to the formation of both 2-nitroanisole and 4-nitroanisole. Separation techniques are then used to isolate the desired 4-nitroanisole.

4-Nitroanisole is sparingly soluble in water but soluble in common organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and benzene. Its melting point is around 54-56 °C and its boiling point is approximately 277 °C.

This compound finds applications as an intermediate in the synthesis of various organic chemicals, including dyes, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals. It can be reduced to 4-aminoanisole (p-anisidine), which is a precursor for many dyes. The nitro group can also be involved in other chemical transformations. Due to its chemical properties, it is handled with appropriate safety precautions in laboratory and industrial settings.
